Abstract

The public discourse on the feudal estates in Hungary, which unfolded around the beginning of the 19th century, was for a long time about the economic and social role and future fate of the typically very large estates in the hands of a few dozen noble families. Although there were always those who argued for the upholding and extension of the system, the majority of those who take part in the discourse, on liberal grounds, would have preferred the abolition or reduction of the feudal tenures, or at least the prevention of new ones. In the late 1870s, however, a tendency was emerging which replaced the demand for restrictive measures with a demand for an expansion of the system of tenures. For a certain period of time, this led to shifting the focus on setting up small and medium-sized tenures. This shift was basically due to certain negative effects of the liberal economic policies of the Hungarian governments after 1867 and to the downsides of modernisation. Those contemporaries who were themselves (potential) losers in this process hoped that state intervention in the market would improve their livelihoods, and often saw the guarantee of it in the preservation of feudal constraints.
