Abstract
The study deals with the history of the 19th century of the guilds of the bootmakers in the urban settlements of Abaúj (Abaúj-Torna) county (Kassa, Gönc, Szepsi and Abaújszántó). It refers to their privileges, government regulation and, more specifically, to the way in which the social status of the guilds’ members changed, determined by their estate and activity. How the masters were able to build life strategies for themselves and their families, what sort of opportunities for mobility or integration were available, and what means of charity and self-care were implemented in the late feudal period and after 1848? The study of the traditions, customs and rituals that characterised the everyday life of the guild also provides an opportunity to show how the norms and the practice defined the paradigms of social change and modernization.
