Abstract

Background and aims: In our study, we investigated the factors influencing the experience of failure at work and the factors contributing to growth from it. The three main questions of our study are: (1) Which previously identified factors influencing the experience of failure at work are present in the Hungarian sample? (2) What other factors, which have not been investigated so far but are relevant based on the literature review, may have an impact on the growth from failure? (3) Which of these factors have the greatest impact on the ability of an employee to experience failure and grow from it as effectively and efficiently as possible? Method: The study involved semi-structured interviews with 32 individuals, 50% female, 50% male, 50% in managerial roles, 50% in non-managerial roles, 50% in competitive roles and 50% in public sector roles. A coding system was then developed based on the responses received. Results: In addition to the previously identified factors, organisational culture and mental toughness have a significant influence on this process, which has not been investigated in previous research. Conclusions: First and foremost, managers are the ones who can help employees grow from failure, but at the same time, the significant power of organizational culture and mental toughness cannot be overlooked by organizations in effective failure management. © 2024 A szerzo(k).
