Abstract

A tanulmány a Biblia társadalomtudományos módszerek segítségével történő kutatásával foglalkozik. Azt állítja, hogy ezen módszerek és kategóriák megfontolt használatának segítségével elkerülhető az etnocentrizmus és az anakronizmus, mivel azt vizsgáljuk, hogyan épültek fel és működtek az ókori mediterrán társadalmak. Két példa hozza közelebb ezt a megközelítést és demonstrálja annak magyarázó erejét: az egyik a kultúrák osztályozása a vertikális-horizontális és a kollektivistaindividualista tengely mentén, valamint az ókorban széles körben elterjedt félelem a szemmel veréstől, amely az irigységből, a tisztesség/szégyen alapú versengésből ered. = This paper deals with the use and usefulness of social scientific methods and categories in the study of the Bible. It argues that a judicious use of these approaches helps us to avoid ethnocentrism and anachronism by looking at the ways ancient Mediterranean societies were constructed and the ways they functioned. Two examples are given to demonstrate the explanatory power of these methods: the classification of societies along the vertical/horizontal and the collectivist/ individualist axes; and the widespread notion of the evil eye in ancient Mediterranean societies, a phenomenon attached to the emotion of envy, the by-product of the basic values of honour and shame in these societies.
