Abstract
In the 17th century, many Irish nobles served in the armies of European Catholic monarchs. Among them, Francis Taaffe, who was a close confidant of Charles V, Duke of Lorraine and leader of one of his army corps, stands out. He took part in the campaign against the Turks in 1683 and was present at the liberation of Vienna and Esztergom. He gives a vivid account of his experiences in letters to his brother, which were published a few years later for the information of the English public. In his letters, he reports not only on the movements and battles with the Turks, but also on the behaviour of the various national armies and his general impressions of the territories that the Christian armies were marching to liberate. Taaffe’s account is also worthy of attention because it shows how he approached the task he had undertaken and how he fought with unflagging loyalty and determination for the goal he had committed to achieving, even when far from his homeland.
