Abstract
The tolerance of dogs to haemorrhagic shock has been studied following the sterile resection of various segments of the small intestine in chronic experiments. Whereas total extirpation of the small intestine proved unfavourable and the resec tion of its distal 33% or proximal 50% was also without any effect, resection of the proximal third or of the distal half increased survival rate to 50% from 10% in the control group. Even more beneficial was the exclusion of the distal half of the small intestine, i.e. of the whole ileum which improved survival rate to almost 100%. Plasma levels of enzymes of lysosomal origin were repeatedly determined during the experi mental period. Changes in plasma acid phosphatase, beta glucuronidase and leucine aminopeptidase activity showed a close parallelism with survival rate.
