Abstract
A total of 106 out of 129 cats anaesthetized with hexobarbital exhibited no intestinal movements after laparotomy. This state served as a model of postoper ative intestinal paralysis. Twenty autonomic drugs of different mode and site of action have been tested on this model for their capacity to restore peristalsis. Chlorpromazine and trifluperidol were found particularly effective in clinical ex perience; their effect is ascribed to their alpha-blocking property, which relieves the peristaltic reflex from inhibition by catecholamines. Postoperative intestinal paralysis is attributed to an autonomic imbalance due to sympathetic dominance.
