Abstract

The fortress of Újhely for centuries had been a point of stability in the Patak manor. In 1538 the fortress was already described as a ruin in the diploma that installed Péter Perényi in his new domains. Our historiography based on the research of Mihály Détshy assumes that the fortress had suffered such damage during the sieges of 1528–29 that the new owner decided to not to rebuild it due to the level of destruction. He decided instead to erect a new representative building close to the town of Patak. Apart from the written and material sources used by the researchers of the fort and the manor I had the opportunity to involve a new type of source material, the numismatic finds unearthed during the fort’s excavations. During the excavations the methodical use of metal detectors helped the discovery of several hundreds of coins, out of which I have managed to identify almost two hundred in the past few years, which may help us answer certain questions without written sources. The paper analyzes the circumstances of the 1528–29 siege and points out that the significant amount of damage affecting the fort was probably not a result of these military activities. A coin pouch find with 1532 as the latest date suggests that the fortress is more likely to have been destroyed in the early 1530s.
