Abstract

The Hungarian public today has either never heard of Iuliu Maniu, or if they have, they usually remem‑ ber the massacres of the Maniu Guards. The root of this distorted image, which still persists today, is believed to lie in the time of Maniu’s trial and his years in prison. In this paper, I seek to answer the question of how the press and political public opinion of the time, guided by commu‑ nist ideology, influenced the image of Maniu in the wider public; how did the Romanian and Hungarian political leadership create an enemy image of Maniu and what fault lines were created between the Hungarian and Romanian political and social communities? I will show how ethnic identity was subordinated to politi‑ cal loyalties in the post‑World War II Soviet‑style state and the means used to construct the enemy image. I base my research on the contemporary Transylvanian and Hungarian press and archival sources, primarily the documents of the Hungarian Embassy in Bucharest and the Peace Preparatory Department. | Publicul maghiar de astăzi fie nu a auzit nici‑ odată de Iuliu Maniu, fie, dacă a auzit, de obicei îşi amin‑ teşte de masacrele gărzilor lui Maniu. Se crede că rădăcina acestei imagini distorsionate, care persistă şi astăzi, se află în perioada procesului lui Maniu şi a anilor de închisoare. În această lucrare, încerc să răspund la întrebarea cum presa şi opinia publică politică a vremii, ghidate de ideo‑ logia comunistă, au influenţat imaginea lui Maniu în rân‑ dul publicului larg; cum au creat liderii politici români şi maghiari o imagine duşmănoasă a lui Maniu şi ce falii au fost create între comunităţile politice şi sociale maghiare şi române? Voi arăta modul în care identitatea etnică a fost subordonată loialităţilor politice în statul de tip sovietic de după cel de‑al Doilea Război Mondial şi mijloacele folosite pentru a construi imaginea inamicului. Îmi bazez cercetarea pe presa contemporană transil‑ văneană şi maghiară şi pe surse de arhivă, în principal documentele Ambasadei Ungariei la Bucureşti şi ale Departamentului de Pregătire pentru Pace.
