Abstract
The Hungarian–Yugoslav relations between 1945 and 1956 had a profound impact on the lives of the South Slavic minorities in Hungary. Based on archival sources, I am examining how the relations between ethnic Hungarians and the Southern Slavs living in the so-called Baja Triangle, a border region at the Yugoslav–Hungarian border, were shaped and influenced by the major political processes of those eventful years. The tensions of the years following World War Two were still vividly remembered by the local population years later, and several factors played a role in their intensity. Although the tensions between 1948 and 1956 did not reach the intensity of earlier years, the verbal give-and-take over language use and the ethnic colour of the clashes showed a certain continuity.
