Abstract

In 1948 the Communists came to power in Hungary. A significant part of the representatives of the so-called “old system” lost their jobs overnight. György Bartók (1882-1970), the most important Hungarian philosopher of the first half of the 20th century, was 60 years old at the time. He had been elected a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences a few years earlier, but was struck off the list of full members in 1948. His life’s work was placed on a banned list, and his earlier work was sometimes directly in the crossfire of ideological attacks. He continued to teach until the first half of the 1950s, when he was forced to withdraw completely from public life. One of the most influential philosophical works of the 20th century seemed completely forgotten. From the 1960s onwards, a more tolerant version of socialism emerged in Hungary. As part of the change in cultural policy, a widely read daily newspaper conducted a short interview with Bartók. What did Bartók talk about and what could he not talk about in the Hungarian press one year before his death? György Bartók’s memories of Attila József are not primarily interesting from the poet’s point of view. However, they tell us a lot about the era in which the interview was published.
