Abstract
The Portuguese language in Spain, although not officially recognized, is present as a minority language, particularly in regions such as Extremadura, Castile and León and Galicia. Portuguese is not used in administration and official documents are only published in Castilian. However, the language is becoming increasingly popular in education, with over 30 000 students studying Portuguese in Extremadura. In Galicia, progress has also been made in promoting the language, mainly through strengthening ties with Lusophone Countries. Further coordinated efforts are needed at both regional and national levels. The study analyzes the reports submitted by the Government of Spain under the Council of Europe’s European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, as well as the recommendations of the Charter’s Committee of Experts. This paper explores the current challenges of the Portuguese language in Spain, with a particular focus on the experiences of Extremadura, Galicia, and Castile and León.
