Abstract

A Volga és Káma folyók melletti Bulgária a középkori Kelet-Európa egyik jelentős politikai központja volt. A 9. század végétől kezdve fontos szerepet töltött be a Közép-Ázsia és Európa közötti távolsági kereskedelemben, a 10. századtól az iszlám világ részévé vált, és egészen a mongol hódításig szilárd politikai kereteket biztosított a területén lakó népeknek.1 Volgai Bulgáriáról a mongol hódítást megelőzően alig jutott hír a Rusztól nyugatra lévő országokba. Egyetlen kivétel Magyarország, ahol viszont tudtak a volgai bulgárok országáról, mert ott élt egy keleten maradt magyar csoport, akikkel a Kárpát-medencei honfoglalástól egészen a mongol hódításig, még ha nem is folyamatosan, de fennmaradtak a kapcsolatok. A következőkben ezeket a kapcsolatokat foglalom össze a tárgyi és írott emlékek alapján, három területre összpontosítva a figyelmet: 1. volgai bulgár eredetű dirhemek a Kárpát-medencében; 2. írott források a Kárpát-medence és Volgai Bulgária közötti útvonalakról és utazásokról; 3. Volgai Bulgáriából Magyarországra érkezett személyek írott forrásokban. | The paper provides a summary of the contacts between Volga Bulgaria and Hungary based on numismatics, written sources and archaeology focusing on three specified topics: 1) the occurance of dirhams from Volga Bulgaria in the Carpathian Basin, 2) written sources about routes and journeys between the Carpathian Basin and Volga Bulgaria, 3) mentions of persons arriving from Volga Bulgaria in the territory of Hungary. The dirham finds from Volga Bulgaria and the written sources corroborate, showing that the contacts between the Carpathian Basin and Volga Bulgaria formed shortly after the Hungarian Conquest. The influx of dirhams can only be traced to the first third of the tenth century (up to the late 940s in neighbouring Dniester region), however as nothing indicates that every coin came fresh from the mint, one may to add a couple of years to the end of this period. Written sources prove the persistence of contacts between the two areas in the second half of the tenth century and later. For the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin, maintaining the connection meant staying in touch with Volga Magyars. The main actors in this were Volga Bulgarian and other Muslims, several of whom settled in Hungary (while we know of no Volga Magyars arriving here to settle). Save for Friar Julian (and the members of expedition of a few years before him), we know the name of no Hungarians who travelled to the Magyars living in Volga Bulgaria.
