Abstract
The paper presents an analysis of Ildikó Mándy’s work, Blue Monday, which premiered in Budapest in December 1993 as part of the II. Hungarian Contemporary Dance and Theater Review. This work was the debut of Mándy as director. It received the Municipality of Budapest Award for the best theater performance of 1993 and became a landmark of its time, significantly determining Mándy’s artistic career. The choreography is based on the embodied knowledge of contact improvisation, the dramaturgy is set in the micro-context of music selection, and the direction ties together the raw and the emotionally charged use of movement sequences, forming a unique language for the piece. In my analysis, I examine the structure of the piece, the elements of the choreography, the performance modes, and the relationship of the performers based on the principles of contact improvisation and the Philther method.
