Abstract

Anthony Mann westerntájaiban az egyes tájelemek konkrét és következetes jelentéstartalmakat hordoznak, melyek interakcióban vannak a cselekmény alakulásával. A hegyek és a folyók megjelenéseinek vizsgálata nyomán kirajzolódott a filmek egészét meghatározó felvételi és szerkesztési szemléletmód, a totális elbeszélés, melyben az egyes beállítások környezeti elemei a film egészére vonatkozóan dramaturgiai funkcióval bírnak. A totális elbeszélés érdemben hozzájárult a Mann-westernekben megjelenő műfajkritika megfogalmazásához. A fókuszba a válságba jutott egyén lelki reintegrációjáért folytatott harca került, a filmforma e küzdelmet kommentálja és alakítja a természeten keresztül. A környezet hozzájárul a filmek akciódússágához is, mely szintén a hősök lelki küzdelmeinek láthatóvá tételét szolgálja. | Anthony Mann’s western landscapes play a pivotal role in his films, where specific elements of nature—such as mountains and rivers—carry concrete and consistent meanings. Mann’s use of „total narrative” supports his critique of the Western genre, focusing on themes of inner conflict and psychological reintegration. His films highlight the struggles of individuals grappling with crises, where the natural environment serves both as a commentator and a shaper of their battles. These struggles are not merely depicted but are actively informed by the physical landscapes, which underscore the tension between human endeavours and the untamed wilderness. Furthermore, Mann’s approach enhances the action within his Westerns. The natural surroundings are integral to making the protagonists’ internal conflicts visually perceptible, merging physical landscapes with emotional and moral struggles. This integration of nature and narrative not only elevates the genre but also deepens its capacity to explore themes of redemption and human resilience.
