Abstract

This research examines the associations between sexual motivation, emotion regulation difficulties, and dyadic coping, focusing on age and sex differences among Hungarian adults through a questionnaire-based approach. Study 1 investigates how self-centered, relationship-oriented, and coping-related sexual motivations correlate with emotion regulation challenges across different ages and sexes. Findings indicate that self-centered sexual motivation is positively associated with overall emotion dysregulation in men but not in women. Additionally, relationship-oriented sexual motivation is negatively associated with age and certain emotion regulation difficulties, while coping-related sexual motivation exhibits distinct patterns of association with emotion regulation challenges between sexes. Study 2 explores the relationship between sexual motivation and dyadic coping, revealing that self-centered sexual motivation correlates negatively with dyadic coping, particularly among men. Conversely, relationship-oriented sexual motivation is positively associated with supportive dyadic coping behaviors, especially in men. Coping-related sexual motivation shows no significant associations with dyadic coping across age or sex. These studies highlight the complex interplay between sexual motivation, emotional regulation, and relational dynamics, underscoring sex differences and age-related trends. The findings suggest that a more comprehensive understanding of sexual motivation and relationship functioning requires careful consideration of age and sex differences.
