Abstract
Towards the end of twentieth century, after the cold war ended and the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) followed by a redundance of Warsaw Pact, new states which exercised their right to autonomy were established in the region of central and eastern Europe. Existing and newly established states in central and southeastern Europe became members of NATO and EU and followed democratic values. Eastern Europe States either remained under the influence of USSR or are currently striving to apply democratic principles. The regional security environment in central Europe has significantly changed due to the implication of these changes and simultaneously due to global security risks, threats and challenges. The concurrence of these events has forced Hungary to evaluate the current security situation and the development of security strategy papers.
