Abstract
ARCHITECTS: BALÁZS FALVAI DLA, DÁVID TÖRÖK DLA The transformation of an abandoned late 19th-century tannery workshop and drying building in Debrecen, a remnant of the city's once-thriving artisan quarter into a dynamic community workshop and studio for the local university's architecture department. Discovered by chance, the dilapidated structure became the subject of a student design competition, with the winning proposal by Balázs Falvai focusing on preserving existing spatial qualities and material character while integrating new functions. The pavilion-like extension, abstractly evoking the site's past use, offers flexible, seasonally adaptable space and creates a terraced connection to the old building, all while thoughtfully incorporating an existing tree that influenced the final design, resulting in an object-like gateway that opens the revitalized heritage site to the street.
