Abstract

Published in 1923 by Aurél Kern and Péter Jekel, the Hungarian Songbook is a typical product of post-Trianon Hungary. This three-language publication (Hungarian, German and Dutch) aimed to promote the uniqueness of Hungarian culture abroad and to win friends and supporters for Hungarian music and culture, as well as for the Hungarian cause (i.e. Hungarian foreign policy), whose primary aim during this period was revanchism and revisionism. The compilation of the songbook’s contents was also a means to this end. Alongside Hungarian folk songs, it includes the ecclesiastical hymn ‘Térj magadhoz drága Sion’ (‘Return to yourself, dear Sion’), which was sung by the Hungarian galley slaves liberated by the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter in 1676. This was done to connect with foreign (Dutch and Swiss) Protestants, strengthen historical ties and appeal for help and sympathy for Hungary.
