Abstract
In his essay Memory in a Culturological Light (1985), Yuri Lotman made a noteworthy observation about the dynamics of Pushkin’s reception in social, cultural, and literary history. The present paper aims to demonstrate that, while Lotman’s intention in this essay was to conceptualise cultural memory as a semiotic phenomenon, it was through the example of Pushkin that Lotman addressed and provided insight into issues that have been the focus of literary cult studies. This common focus between the two fields has been the subject of research in recent years. The present paper attempts to reconstruct this intersection specifically within Lotman’s conceptual framework. It proposes new interpretations of two periods of Pushkin’s reception, namely the 1840s–60s and 1910s–20s, from the perspective of Lotman’s theory, and argues that these periods can be identified as „periods of cultural forgetting”.
