Abstract

The present article aims at proving the hypothesis that invented (fictive) place-names (mostly found in literary works) contain the characteristic affixes that are present in real place-names (i.e. those having real denotata). The author justifies the fact that the primary function of these suffixes is to derive place-names. The literary examples suggest that these affixes form active components of the speakers’ name consciousness. – Apart from invented place-names collected from fiction the author examines fictive family names denoting the place of origin by means of combining a place-name and an -i suffix (omitting the suffix results in gaining a fictive place-name). – Literary appearances of affixes known as the most common place-name suffixes (e.g. -d, -s, -i, -ny), occurrences of derivative clusters (e.g. -sd, -nd) and some typical name endings are also treated in the article.
