Abstract
DARLINGTON STATE SCHOOL, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA ARCHITECT: FJCSTUDIO The Darlington Public School in Sydney stands as a testament to a culturally embedded architectural philosophy, earning it the 2024 World Architecture Festival's Building of the Year award. The institution's ethos begins with a profound acknowledgment of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, on whose land the school is built, a principle that deeply informs the building's design. By seamlessly weaving together the area's Indigenous heritage, the historical context of the colonial school system, and innovative, sustainable practices, the project creates a unique learning environment. Through extensive community collaboration, the design respects its predecessor's brick architecture while introducing modern, flexible learning spaces that connect the interior with the outdoors. The "Connection to Country" concept is central, integrating Indigenous art and storytelling to foster a deep sense of place and history, thereby creating a holistic educational experience that looks to both the past and the future as a model for
