Abstract
This paper examines the didactic poems (Mong. surγal silüg ) found in the Mongolian khuuriin ülger oral narrative Siuvai Γang’s Resistance against the Tang chanted by a famous bard named Erdeniǰirüke, one of the most prominent representatives of the philosophical school of bards, and explores the features and classification of these poems. The paper concludes that Erdeniǰirüke’s didactic poems sprang from three main sources: Mongolian traditional ethics, Chinese Confucian ethics and philosophy, and Buddhist morality. Erdeniǰirüke’s didactic poems are characterised by varying parallelism and rich comparisons. The edifying function and philosophical meaning of the khuuriin ülger are very prominent in Erdeniǰirüke’s oeuvre because he frequently embedded didactic poems.
