Abstract

The Sanhe yulu 三合語錄 is a Manchu–Mongolian–Chinese conversational (vernacular) textbook published during the Qing dynasty, in which the Mongol text body is written in Manchu script. The original textbook is known under the Manchu title Tanggū meyen (‘Hundred chapters’). The Sanhe yulu studied here is the Mongolian translation of Tanggū meyen . This source has been analysed in detail from the perspective of traditional text philology. However, the current article aims to explore speech acts in the context of the three different cultural backgrounds (Manchu, Mongolian and Chinese) embodied in the present source, which is a particularly novel undertaking in the field of Mongolian and Manchu studies.
