Abstract

Dr. Jonas Gustav Vilhelm Zander was a Swedish physician active mostly in the second half of the 1800s. He may be considered a pioneer, as he was a forerunner of mechano-therapy. In fact, he invented mechanical "special machines" to make his patients perform movements, simple or complex. His ideas may have looked bizarre at the time, but as time passed by, the same ideas gained increasing approval in the scientific-technical field. He thought that many diseases of humans could be counteracted or even cured through forced physical exercise, going against the beliefs of the time which tended to promote total rest to heal the body. Indeed, using the knowledge of his time, he made a great step forward to solve many problems and diseases. This study aims to support Dr. Zander's theories by demonstrating an innovative device that is unique for specific muscular anatomical objectives, targeted and calibrated to counteract the symptoms and rehabilitate motor skills of Parkinson's disease. This device, called Angel’s Wings, is an example of the value of Dr Zander's theories since it has been clinically validated and is already used in specialized medical centres.
