Abstract
Denture base materials had seen a variety of inventions from ivory, hippopotamus bone, silver, gold, brass, and porcelain, to vulcanite rubber, celluloid, Bakelite, hodite, and more recently acrylic. Vulcanite and Celluloid dominated the denture base market for most of the latter part of the 19th century. Looking for alternative materials, Bakelite was an attempt to improve on the undesirable properties of vulcanite.
