Abstract
The end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century is one of the most exciting periods in Hungary’s sports history. In the capital and the countryside, countless clubs were founded which played a decisive role over the time in cultivation and dissemination of physical culture. One of these clubs was the Eperjesi Torna és Vívó Egyesület, which became one of the first and most influential sports clubs in the Eastern half of Upper Hungary. Throughout its history, together with promoting sport, the club was a dedicated advocate of Hungarian identity, which challenged its membership in many ways after World War I.
