Abstract

In this study, the competitive advantage of stressful visual stimuli was examined. We used simultaneous stimulus presentation in order to examine whether an attended cognitive component (a visual search task) or a non-attended – but emotionally arousing – component (a highly arousing negative picture) would have a greater effect on attention. Participants’ found negative pictures more unpleasant and arousing than neutral stimuli. Their performance in the visual search task was better in the negative condition than in the neutral. Brain activation patters responding to negative condition suggest that unpleasant pictures induced higher level of arousal and automatically enhanced attention.
