Abstract

A kolonializmuskutatás kevésbé vizsgált tárgya Oroszország. Az orosz államot ritkán tekintik gyarmatosítónak, annak ellenére, hogy több mint száz éven keresztül az Orosz Birodalom rendelkezett tengerentúli gyarmatokkal, elsősorban Alaszka területén, illetve 1812–1849 között Kaliforniában is.1 Jelen tanulmányban arra teszek kísérletet, hogy Jason C. Sharman, a Cambridge-i Egyetem kutatójának írása alapján bemutassam Oroszország gyarmati politikáját. 2019-es munkájában, amely magyarul ugyanabban az évben jelent meg A gyengék birodalmai címmel,2 Sharman arra tett kísérletet, hogy bebizonyítsa: a kora újkorban végbement katonai forradalom nem járult hozzá ahhoz, hogy a klasszikus gyarmatosító államok sikeresen uralmuk alá hajtsák a Föld jelentős részét. Azt vizsgálta, hogy ha nem a katonai forradalom, akkor mi volt az, ami elősegítette a nyugat-európai államok „sikerét”. Tanulmányom három nagyobb egységre tagolódik. Először az oroszok amerikai gyarmatosításának historiográfiáját mutatom be röviden, hogy ábrázoljam, a különböző időszakokban miként tekintettek az egyes kutatók az oroszok gyarmatosító politikájára. Ezt követően azokról az elméleti megközelítésekről írok, különösképpen Sharman elméletéről, amelyek alapján a harmadik részben ismertetem az orosz állam amerikai gyarmatosító politikáját. ˇ| In an earlier work, J. C. Sharman attempted to demonstrate that European states had long played a subordinate role in colonial territories compared to local empires. In this paper, Sharman’s theories on colonialism are used to portray Russian America and the colonial policies of the Russians in the Americas. The paper seeks to examine whether Russia was also a ‘weak empire,’ at least within Sharman’s interpretive framework. To do this, a brief historiographical overview of Russian America and Russian colonialism will first be presented. Then, three concepts will be introduced to provide the theoretical background for the study: a general overview of colonialism, a typology of colonialism, and the place of Russian America in this typology, and Sharman’s work. This will be followed by a discussion of Russian colonial policy based on the theories presented in part two. Many similarities and differences can be found between Russian colonialism and that of Western European states, but it appears that the Russian Empire was indeed a weak empire in the Americas, similar to the Anglo–Spanish–French Empire until the mid-18th century.
