Abstract
In the 19th century, Erzurum emerged as a key borderland in the Russian–Ottoman rivalry, shaped by Russian geopolitical ambitions in the Caucasus. This study analyzes Russian consular reports from the late 19th century to examine how Erzurum’s strategic significance intersected with imperial ideologies, minority policies, and transborder revolutionary movements. By contextualizing Russian consular perceptions of Armenian nationalism, British influence, and Ottoman governance, these sources reveal that borderland dynamics, intellectual transfers, and historical entanglements are not merely subjects of scholarly analysis but integral to contemporary understandings, reflecting the ideological and intellectual tensions within the Russian Empire.
