Abstract
The Hungarian “Reform Catholic” movement’s conception of nation and state between 1931 and 1944 is the focal point of this examination. The Saint Stephen’s concept is evidence of the ideal of striving for social harmony, the existence of an inclusive idea of the nation – including the lower classes and nationalities – the rejection of ’crude nationalism’ (Pope Pius XI) and the insistence on national independence after the Anschluss (1938). The State of St. Stephen became a symbol of the sought-after confederation through the hoped-for peaceful revision. However, it is also recognised as a symbol of the Christian conception of the state, namely as a just and equitable system of self-government, free from racial bias, uniting peoples and ensuring the realisation of self-government. The concept expressed was not that of power, but rather that of good governance for the common good.
