Abstract

This study explores the evolution of library cataloguing practices and thematic categorization in private and institutional collections from the 17th to the 18th century, with a particular focus on works related to Hungarian and Transylvanian history and culture. By examining historical inventories and bibliographies – including those compiled by Ondrej Czemanka, Gabriel Valovicz, and Franz Ernest Brückmann – the article highlights how early efforts to document Hungarian-related literature predate the formal emergence of “Hungarology” as a distinct academic field in the 20th century. The author discusses how thematic groups such as Hungarici gradually transitioned from linguistic to content-based classifications, and how these cataloguing choices reflect broader intellectual trends associated with the historia litteraria movement.
