Abstract
The rapid proliferation of residential photovoltaic (PV) installations and increased electrification pose significant operational challenges for low-voltage electricity distribution networks. To mitigate these issues, leveraging controllable flexible loads, particularly electric storage water heaters (EWHs), has become increasingly relevant. This paper presents an assessment of a DSO flexibility platform that integrates advanced market-based mechanisms to control EWHs using smart meters for real-time grid support. A pilot study involving 305 water heaters across multiple transformer districts in Hungary was conducted. The control logic combined flexibility signals with network state estimation to dynamically manage boiler operations. Cluster analysis revealed distinct operational patterns, effectively grouping the devices based on their grid positions and control schedules. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the platform in managing voltage congestion, highlighting its potential for scalable deployment to defer network reinforcements and enhance grid stability.
