Abstract
Cam–follower mechanisms remain essential across automotive, industrial, and handheld power tools; here, the authors analyse the twin-eccentric cam–slot drive of a hedge trimmer. A compact kinematic model was derived that yields displacement, velocity, acceleration, and jerk (S-V-A-J) of the reciprocating blades from the shaft angle and speed. The transmission employs two equal-radius discs on a standard shaft with opposite eccentricities that run-in conjugate slots at the blade roots, enforcing synchronised, counter-phase motion. Closed-form relations are obtained for disc centre trajectories and constrained blade motion under vertical guidance, enabling frequency-dependent evaluation of SV-A-J characteristics.
