Abstract
István Bogár is widely known as an educator, ethnographic collector, and teacher, as well as for his association with the Bogár Farm and the Sárköz wedding tradition. However, this study presents him as a soldier. His diaries, written during the Second World War, have been preserved in his family’s archives. Spanning five volumes, they cover the period from November 1944 to March 1946. Bogár enlisted in Pécs as an officer candidate in October 1944. By the end of the year, he was sent to Germany, where he was stationed at a training camp in Auerbach. He did not participate in active combat. In April 1945, he and his unit were taken prisoner by American forces. He was interned in several prison camps before finally returning home in March 1946.
