Abstract
The name of the Éber dynasty of painters sounds familiar in Baja: Sándor Éber the Elder was a teacher and fresco painter, and two of his children, Sándor the Younger and Anna, also became painters. Their works and belongings are preserved in the Éber Memorial House in Baja. However, the Éber family also had multiple connections to Szekszárd and Tolna County. The parents of Sándor Éber the Elder – his father Márton and his mother Anna Csapó Pápai – were born in Mözs. Márton started teaching in Fejér County, where he resided with his family for more than a decade. Around 1880, they relocated Szekszárd and lived there until the mid-1910s. Márton Éber was not only known as a teacher but also played a significant role in the musical life of the town as the conductor of the “Szegzárd Choir”. Two of his sons, Géza and Sándor, also appeared in concerts and other festive events and also performed occasionally as adults. The citizens of Szekszárd followed the careers of the two boys, and although they were not born there, they were often referred to as natives of the town as they spent most of their childhood there. Márton Éber had considerable immoveable property in the settlement. Around 1910, he had a new house built (3 Fürdőház St.), which with its façade showing a statue in a niche is still a characteristic building in the town. The study reconstructs the life of the Éber family in Szekszárd based on contemporaneous sources and artefacts, documents, and photographs found in the collection of the Éber Memorial House. It offers insight into the career and activities of Márton Éber at the head of the “Szegzárd Choir”. It attempts to reconstruct cleric and pianist Géza Éber’s career, which has sunk into oblivion by today. Since Sándor Éber the Elder’s activity is known in detail, the author only summarises the key moments of his relationship with Szekszárd and Tolna County.
