Abstract
1687 was one of the most important and eventful years in the war of reconquest against the Turks, one of the greatest successes of which was the Battle of Harsány Hill, also known as the Battle of Nagyharsány or the socalled "Second Mohács", on 12 August. During the battle the allied armies led by Charles V, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, and Maximilian II Emanuel, PrinceElector of Bavaria, won a decisive victory over the larger Ottoman army led by Sari Süleyman Pasha. This victorious battle allowed the allied troops to make a glorious entry into the Principality of Transylvania, thus extending the control of the Christian troops over the vast majority of the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary. The history of the battle has been widely researched, in many foreign archives. Among the military history sources, the personal records and diaries of the generals who played a decisive role are of particular importance. The paper aims to show the changes in the general's decisionmaking process during a campaign by using a recently discovered source, the autograph diary of Charles V.
