Abstract
A new stabilized FEM formulation for advective-diffusive-reactive problems is presented. The new method, called Spotted Petrov-Galerkin (SPG), combines two perturbations of quadratic Galerkin weight function: the first one is a generalized SUPG operator, the second one a nodal spot-like controlling operator designed for reactive instabilities. The formulation covers all the combinations of advective and reactive effects, associated with the dimensionless element Peclet and reaction numbers. After an introduction to the method, we assess the reliability of SPG in the control of reactivity related oscillations both in model problems and in turbomachinery turbulence modelling. In the numerical experiments the SPG performance has been compared to classical stabilization schemes, e.g. SUPG.
