Abstract

Ha a két világháború közötti magyar politikai rendszer születésére gondolunk, általában Szeged, az itteni ellenforradalmi kormányok, a Nemzeti Hadsereg és az előbbiben szerepet vállaló, az utóbbiban fővezéri posztot megszerző Horthy Miklós jut eszünkbe. Az aradi ellenkormányt a legtöbb szakmunkában csupán megemlítik, esetleg egy-két mondatot szentelnek neki. Tanulmányunk célja, hogy az 1919 májusában francia támogatással Aradon megalakult kabinet létrejöttének előzményeit, tevékenységét, tagjainak mezőhegyesi internálását, majd megszűnését bemutassuk. | On 6 May 1919 the counter-revolutionary government was established with French support in Arad. The prime minister of the cabinet was Count Gyula Károlyi, the ministers were politicians and public figures from Arad and Temesvár. They repealed the laws of the Hungarian Soviet Republic and established the Arad County Gendarmerie as a counter-revolutionary armed force. The government functioned in Arad for a few days because the ministers decided to move to Szeged. However, the two trains did not arrive in the city on the banks of the Tisza, the Romanians interned Gyula Károlyi and most of the ministers on 9 May in Mezőhegyes. The interned persons were released on 22 May 1919 and returned to Arad. At the end of May the ministers resigned and on 31 May 1919 the new counter-revolutionary government was established in Szeged. The sources of my study are the documents of the Arad government, the memoirs published in Hungary and Romania, and the press of the period between the two world wars.
