Abstract

Peter Philip von Herbert-Rathkeal (1735-1802) konstantinápolyi követ elsődleges feladata volt, hogy a bécsi udvar hadüzenetét a kijelölt módon és időben átadja a Porta számára. A feladat végrehajtása után a kirendeltség és Herbert-Rathkeal is menekülni kényszerült az Oszmán Birodalomból. Távozásuk végül 1788. február 15-én megtörtént és közel három hónapnyi hajóút után kötöttek ki Livorno partjainál. A megmenekült személyek és a követ is karanténba kerültek hetekre, ahonnan csak nyár elején indulhattak tovább Bécsbe. | The primary task of Peter Philip von Herbert-Rathkeal (1735-1802), the ambassador to Constantinople, was to deliver the Court of Vienna’s declaration of war to the Porte in the manner and at the time appointed. After carrying out this task, the legation and Herbert-Rathkeal were forced to flee the Ottoman Empire. Their departure finally took place on 15 February 1788 and after nearly three months of sailing they landed on the coast of Livorno. Both the escaped prisoners and the envoy were quarantined for weeks, from where they were only allowed to continue their journey to Vienna at the beginning of the summer.
