Abstract

A Pápai Református Közgyűjtemények Közleményei | Throughout the centuries the Pápa Reformed College with its high level instruction and education provided Transdanubia and other regions of Hungary with teachers and pastors. The author, a military historian, has published many essays and books relative to the officers of the army participating in the fights of the Hungarian nobility for independence in 1848/49. There were 12.000 officers serving in the Hungarian army (4 generals, 134 colonels, 551 majors, 2800 captains and 8400 lieutenants and sub-lieutenants). It was 11.500 officers who held out until the end of the war. After reviewing the structure of the independent Hungarian army, the essay introduces 184 officers. All of them were alumni of the Pápa College. Two of them were generals, one of them was a sub-general, 7 of them were majors, 41 of them were captains, and 133 of them were lieutenants and sub-lieutenants. For their bravery, 11 of them were granted the third class of the military decoration, which goes far beyond the average of officers. Six of them died the death of heroes: Sándor Petőfi major, Endre Győrffy lieutenant, József Dús, Károly Pázmándy, József Saáry and József Szobi sub-lieutenants. Many of them got wounded so seriously that they became disabled. Those formerly serving in the imperial army were tried by court martial. Lajos Kálmány major was sentenced to 8 year, Mór Kerkápoly major to 10 year, Lajos Nagy major to 16 year imprisonment in a fortress. As a punishment, 30 officers were enlisted into the imperial army, two officers emigrated. The essay presents the life stories and carriers of all of them.
