Abstract
ARCHITECTS: HERZOG & DE MEURON BASEL The HORTUS office building in Basel achieves maximal ecological sustainability by prioritizing locally sourced earth and wood. The project's minimal carbon footprint stems from pioneering a prefabricated wood-and-rammed-earth composite floor system. This system, which uses on-site excavated earth and regionally sourced timber, functions as a fire-resistant and climate-regulating element. By employing inclined glued laminated beech supports, the project establishes a new standard for resource-efficient, low-carbon construction and circular economy principles.
