Abstract
The city of Bākharz and its surroundings in the eastern part of present-day Iran were a regionally important center of book production in the sixteenth century. In my presentation, I will focus on the family and professional connections of a little-known Safavid scribe from this area, Mīr Muḥammad Ḥusayn. Little is known about the workshop in Bākharz; the only available information comes from colo-phons in manuscripts and inscriptions on gravestones in the cemetery of a local khānqāh (Sufi monastery), which suggest its existence. The scribe examined in this lecture is connected to the area not only through the manuscripts he copied but also through his burial in this cemetery. Through the life and professional relationships of Mīr Muḥammad Ḥusayn, we can gain deeper insight into the typical life of local scribes, their master-disciple relationships, and their position in society.
