Abstract
For solid bodies the principle of virtual work can often be written as the variation of a functional. This fact can be applied to determine constitutive equations. Mindlin utilized this idea in the determination of higher order constitutive equations. Mindlin's method can be generalized into a few directions. Such generalizations result in that the first order constitutive equations contain first derivatives of strain and stress with respect to time and space coordinates in a linear form only.
