Abstract
This paper reports on quantitative tests of passive techniques for rotor-tip noise control in ventilating fans using modifications to the blade-tip end-plate as anti-vortex appendages. A variable thickness in the end-plate appendage is shown to control the chord-wise evolution of leakage-vortex rotation number. The results show that the new end-plate design configuration provides passive control of vortex breakdown, and thus represents a mechanism whereby leakage-vortex bursting can be avoided.
