Abstract
The present essay offers an interpretation of the novel „Aufruhr der Meerestiere“ (2022) by the Austrian contemporary author Marie Gamillscheg within the context of eco-criticism in literary and cultural studies. The central focus is on how the novel responds to societal and aesthetic challenges „after nature“, a phrase that is understood not only in a temporal sense but also as a reference to an old convention of representation and its potential refiguration under the altered conditions of a reflective Anthropocene. It is argued that Gamillscheg‘s work deals with the possibilities of a non-instrumental natural science and learning from nature in a new sense not only thematically but also critically engages with the tradition of anthropomorphic and anthropocentric speech in literature.
