Abstract

Design as a multifaceted discipline, is intensely intertwined with the fabric of society, shaping our environments in which we live and interact. As we move further into the 21st century, the role of design in facing systemic global and local social issues has even become more important. In this track, design's contributions to tackle pressing systemic global and local social issues were explored through addressing the various ways communi ties can coexist while exploring the different actors' networks, systems and roles. The presented papers focused on topics related to urban co-habitation and impactful community work. We received methodological contributions such as explorations of scenario building and service design's potential contributions to placemaking, new methods for collaborative design research for neighborhood communities or social innovation in a post-industrial redevelopment. Design futuring approaches like projective provotype design were conceptualized and tested with communities to build alternative approaches to smart city methodologies. Also, case studies were presented, for instance, focusing on Safe School Zones, the CultiRider, a moving communi ty space creating intercultural connections, Empowering Experiential Education in Design, a case study related to spontaneous design or the Evolution of Typography in Delhi's Historic Architectural Monuments, a research analy sis which explores the development of typography and cultural influences on different buildings of India's capital. Other works opened debates around issues of equity and diversity by overviewing gender-sensitive products or by discussing the opportunities of breaking down the stigma of medical abortion through the approaches of communication design. Also, the topic of equity and justice was debated in relation to public library design - and how it differs in different parts of the world - as well as the topic of evoking agency through ecological citizenship. Through navigating the potential of participatory practices, design-based processes and the borders between research and activism, this track opened up for future discussions, reflections and experimentations regarding different ways of living.
