Abstract
Small plastic gears are straight-toothed gears with an involute profile and a module of no larger than 0.5 mm. These gears are made of some type of plastic, usually POM or PA. There is no international standard for the calculations required for the reliable design of plastic gears; instead, regionally accepted guidelines, national guidelines or guidelines within individual companies are used. This means that essentially every major plastic gear manufacturer has its own calculation method and guidelines. This situation poses a major obstacle for the plastic gear industry, as it hinders the easy exchange of design knowledge and information. Among the forms of damage to plastic gears, the literature considers failure due to tooth heating to be one of the most common. Therefore, we compared the values calculated from the heating formulas in the literature with the measurement results.
