Abstract

The catalytic transformation of olefinic C¼C unsaturated bonds has undergone significant advancements over the past decades. Two of its catalytic tools, i.e., olefin metathesis and alkene isomerisation have both emerged as highly sustainable (atom efficient, low catalyst load requirement) and versatile reactions, promoted by homogenous and heterogenous catalyst systems. Due to the similar substrate and the compatibility of the applied catalysts, the combination of olefin metathesis and alkene isomerisation enables fine-tuning of the alkene chain length, provides a useful one-pot synthetic strategy for the production of fine and value-added chemicals, and opens novel possible pathways for the chemical valorisation of polymer waste. Herein, we present an overview of the fundamental principles and the recent literature of the tandem isomerisation–metathesis of alkenes.
