Abstract
The present study explores the development and structure of military reserve forces in selected NATO member countries on the eastern flank – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. The study draws upon current legal frameworks, governmental regulations, publicly available materials from national recruitment centres, as well as on relevant previously published academic studies to analyse the evolution of reserve systems following the accession of these countries to NATO. The focus lies on the typology of military reserves, entry criteria and other additional benefits. Additionally, the duration and format of basic training, mandatory refresher training, and the availability of specialised courses are also important considerations. The study aims to compare and interpret national approaches to the modernisation and integration of reserve forces within the broader context of NATO’s eastern flank defence posture, a topic of significant relevance in today’s geopolitical landscape.
